The abrupt loss of fame for athletes can be overwhelming

High profile athletes are famous one day, but barely recognizable after their playing days end. Parents, are you really allowing your kid to quit sports?

A lot of parents tell me "if my child wanted to quit I would let him." The reality, however, is that some parents say these words, but everything else about their voice tone and body language screams the opposite. For some parents their own personal stake in sports is more than their kid's, which often leads to big problems when it comes to balancing quitting versus sport burnout.

Athletes and their terrible spin job PR teams

When athletes get into trouble these days, how they respond to the media can make -- or break -- the athletes career. In recent years we have witnessed some really questionable PR moves made by athletes, from complete withdrawal (Tiger) to flat out denial (Roger Clemens). Although the athlete makes the final decision when it comes to how to respond to a crisis, the spin job team around them often plays a vital role in the decision -- leaving many to wonder about the credibility of these… Continue

Are we "hard-wired" to love violence in sports?

This week the NFL is working hard to clean up the game -- specifically head-to-head contact. The question, however, is how they are going to do this when it appears as though violent aggression is precisely what grabs the attention of many fans who pay big bucks to support the NFL. In fact, we may even be genetically programmed to want to see violence in sports, making it even more challenging for the NFL to improive on-field safety while at the same time keeping their fan base.…

The legend of Michael Jordan - and what has happened since he left

As a coach, it can be challenging at times to find elite-level athletes who are tenacious and more concerned about winning championships than they are stroking their own ego and making billions of dollars. Michael Jordan is back in the news, making a claim that he could have scored "100 points today," and for gracing the cover of the new NBA 2K11 video game. As a coach Im sure you have seen some of your athletes wearing Power Balance bracelets lately, as they have become the latest craze in sports. For LBJ it's not racism, but rather how he handled "the decision"

This week LeBron James and Maverick Carter told CNN they believe racism may be behind why so many fans have turned on The King. Unfortunately, this simply isn't true. Instead, fans are bothered by the way James punked Cleveland, giving no advance warning that he was leaving town, and essentially handcuffing the franchise from signing other free agents this past summer.
