What Winner's Know: Part I

Winners know what they don't know.

This might sound like a contradiction, but if you know what you don't know, you can go and learn it, or find someone who can guide you through it. Real ignorance is not a lack of knowledge or education, but a lack of curiosity. The moment you think you know everything, you're doomed. Before you make any big move, always ask yourself, "What don't I know about what I am getting into?" Then go out and find it.

The "politics" of sports

Many parents complain when their child isn't given a starting position, often pointing to "politics" as being the reason for the decision. Could it be that coaches make "political" decisions over putting the best kids on the field?? Or is that many parents have trouble seeing their child's ability objectively, and therefore look for another reason or someone to blame when their child doesn't see much playing time?

What Winner's Know

Whether you're a chess master, a ping-pong player, a guitar picker, or just a fun-of-the-mill basketball player, rule number one of winning remains the same: Surround yourself with people who are wiser, more accomplished, and just plain smarter than you are.

I've tried to do that consistently over my own coaching career, and I've been richly rewarded for it. I've worked with some of the games best in our area. And I like to think that a little bit of their wisdom and knowledge has… Continue

Helping Individuals Become a Team

Sidney Lumet's captivating 1957 movie, Twelve Angry Men, examines the inner workings of a jury. Henry Fonda plays an architect who labors to convince his fellow jurors that they should look more closely at the evidence against a young man accused of murder. At the beginning of the film, 11 of the 12 are prepared to find him guilty and get out of there quickly. The architect believes there is something wrong with the case against the boy. He is clever enough to begin to convince other jurors… Continue

The abrupt loss of fame for athletes can be overwhelming

High profile athletes are famous one day, but barely recognizable after their playing days end. One possible reason why so many athletes have such difficulty when dealing with sport retirement is the sudden loss of perceived importance to the world, a challenge that most people will never personally experience.

Parents, are you really allowing your kid to quit sports?

A lot of parents tell me "if my child wanted to quit I would let him." The reality, however, is that some parents say these words, but everything else about their voice tone and body language screams the opposite. For some parents their own personal stake in sports is more than their kid's, which often leads to big problems when it comes to balancing quitting versus sport burnout.

Athletes and their terrible spin job PR teams

When athletes get into trouble these days, how they respond to the media can make -- or break -- the athletes career. In recent years we have witnessed some really questionable PR moves made by athletes, from complete withdrawal (Tiger) to flat out denial (Roger Clemens). Although the athlete makes the final decision when it comes to how to respond to a crisis, the spin job team around them often plays a vital role in the decision -- leaving many to wonder about the credibility of these… Continue

Squeeze and Slow Down! There is no RELAX.

WOW!

What a busy weekend. Had to take advantage of the gorgeous weather. While hiking on Saturday a conversation turned into "What do you do for abs?" Probably the top three questions any one in this field gets asked relates to the "six pack" region of the body. What are you doing to strengthen this area?

Are we "hard-wired" to love violence in sports?

This week the NFL is working hard to clean up the game -- specifically head-to-head contact. The question, however, is how they are going to do this when it appears as though violent aggression is precisely what grabs the attention of many fans who pay big bucks to support the NFL. In fact, we may even be genetically programmed to want to see violence in sports, making it even more challenging for the NFL to improive on-field safety while at the same time keeping their fan base.…

Youth & Interscholastic coach burnout - a growing American problem

While youth sport burnout usually captures the headlines, it may be youth coach burnout that should demand more attention! A growing number of youth and interscholastic coaches today are suffering from the strain, pressure, and unrealistic expectations associated with the job -- leaving many to have to cope with tremendous amounts of stress. Coach burnout can lead to a host of physical and emotional problems, drug and alcohol abuse, broken marriages, and… Continue

Length or weight?

Hello!

Do we always need to add weight to the "bar" to increase the intensity? Why do we look to adding resistance first as a means to justify progression? Are their other ways to increase the effectiveness of a set or to think outside the box to benefit our athletes? If you have asked yourself these questions, then maybe this will get you thinking:

20/25's: Another Track Interval Mile Madness Day!

Greetings,

Well, it was another interval day on the track. This time, I cut down the distances & times even further for something different to handle. Simliar to my 40/50 workout I mentioned in the last blog on Friday, I decided to cut it down to a 20/25 every 100 meters. Here's how it went:

1/4 mile jog to the track

1/4 mile jog on the track (roughly 4 min total)

Transition right away into 100m in under 20 seconds, resting for the remaining time until 45… Continue

The college football system - can it be improved upon?

Some teams play a killer schedule, while others play cupcakes --- would a playoff system help? The current system used in college football is controversial, unbalanced, and very confusing - but is it still the best system to use?

Alphabet soup.

Hello,

This one is for the guy you laugh at in the gym. Don't be "that guy" (or "that gal" for that matter). Take time to pay attention to the little things that help keep the body healthy. Let me know if you have seen someone like this.

Lacrosse is Growing

When I was first introduced to the sport , one thing I learned quickly was how little experience I had.I was surrounded by guys who grew up with a lacrosse stick in their hands.First thing I thought was wow how out of place am I?. But since then I've had the chance to play three others sports and Lacrosse has been the one that I seemingly enjoy as time progressed. Lot's of people look at Lacrosse as a way to take away time from the traditional Spring sport Baseball. But in no way does it take… Continue

The legend of Michael Jordan - and what has happened since he left

As a coach, it can be challenging at times to find elite-level athletes who are tenacious and more concerned about winning championships than they are stroking their own ego and making billions of dollars. Michael Jordan is back in the news, making a claim that he could have scored "100 points today," and for gracing the cover of the new NBA 2K11 video game. While Jordan had his own flaws, as well as critics, from an overall perspective of his contributions on and off the court there aren't too… Continue

The Nellie Innovation

The October 4th, 2010 edition of Sports Illustrated provides a quick peak into the final days of one of the games best coaches. Don Nelson--"Nellie"--will be saying 'good-bye' to the Golden State Warriors and quiet possibly trading in his 1335-1065 record in the NBA for his house in Maui, but not before leaving the game with the rogue feeling of a trailblazer (ironically one of few NBA teams Coach Nelson never coached) having wrote the book on thinking outside of the box. If no for "Nellie" we… Continue
