Hi to All:

I have a series of Baseball Mental Game articles you all might be interetsed in having access to.  In addition I have a survey for Baseball parents, and coaches that may be of advantage to you.  These are totally FREE to you.  Let me know if you are interested.

PS:  I did play professional baseball and have an active mental game practice in baseball.

Cheers

John Ellsworth

Hi folks. I will be putting together a sportLab info package (full visual feedback systems that feature Dartfish software) targeted to professional baseball teams. If anyone has any ideas what sort of applications or features I might want to emphasise, the advice would be much appreciated!

The Mental Game: A significant portion of my coaching practice is focused on the Mental Game of Baseball. Anyone looking for help in this area please contacts me. I do specialize working with pitchers. www.protexsports.com, http://www.protexsports.com/bio.htm

Steve,
You are so right about our pitchers becoming robotized and non-athletic, amateur baseball people are so hypmotized by what the major league people do that they stray away from good fundamental baseball reality that shows that baseball is a passive to an energetic, explosive generated momentum, controlled body movement game,Study lincecum, Koufax, Beckett, and even Whitey Ford, although he was not as directly sideways at landing and his stride was not quite as long, he had a nice wind and crane up, no standing on the back foot and leg, he went right on down the hill at his target with non- stoppage good momentum, timing and mechanics, as individuals these guy's were smart enough to figure some things out for themselves and learned how to use their whole body from the ground up to gain momentum and timing instead of just using their arm to deliver the ball to their intended target, they had something that our present day so called experts from the front office to managers and coaches below them do not possess and if they do they do they do not apply these traits to the game and their players, the front office people are so engrossed in total commercialization that they have made puppets out of their managers and coaches, some managers are just as guilty though, a friend of mine who I played minor league ball with was pitching coach with Houston, his manager would not let him and the other coaches make a move unless he told them what to do first, which in my books is "bunko" another acquaintance of mine was actually fired from minor league managing more than once due to the fact that he was and is a "TEACHER" who devoted himself to teaching those who he coached, he was told not to bother with "TEACHING" just let them play,"BUNKO" managers need to let their coaches use their experience and knowledge to the best of their abilities at any time they see fit, the are certain physical and mental aspects of baseball, hitting and pitching in particular that have proven to be highly successful many years ago that have been forgotten about mainly because there are too many tinkerers who simply cannot stay with successful methods and work with them consistently, I am not saying though that experimentation does not have it's place, it most certainly does, we have gotten to the point where people who have been interested enough to devote themselves to becoming excellent, experienced, knowledgeable and competent "TEACHERS" and have learned to be so by studying and learning from the most knowledgeable "TEACHERS" of our game of baseball are almost extinct, the very reason that there are entirely too many chronic sore arms and arm surgeries from the major league level right on down to those age groups and levels as young as 13yrs. old, baseball desperately is in need of experienced, knowledgeable and competent "TEACHERS" there is a significant difference between "TEACHING" and"COACHING" "TEACHING" is the first and foremost important aspect of the two, pitchers and hitters suffer the most from not having someone who can "TEACH" them how to properly use their whole body from the ground up,pitchers desperately need"TEACHERS" who can"TEACH" them how to properly use their whole body from the ground up with a stride of at least the length of their body height to alleviate the tension and abuse to the arm that the unnatural act of throwing a baseball creates, instead of just throwing with their arm only, as you can obviously see I am a serious advocate of competent "TEACHING," knowledgeable"TEACHING" abilities are most valuable when conveying one's knowledge to others.
During the step back and full wind up as you must realize you start a sequence of body and arm flexibility rhythmic movements that allows one to not be tense and robotic within their delivery to their intended target, why should pitchers stand there motionless, crane up, stop and stand there all day and gain absolutely no momentum until the arm enters into the throwing motion? Because some air head in major league ball decided that the less movement the less unnecessary energy spent out, maybe they should cart their pitchers around on golf carts etc. and only let them move around when they are warming up and pitching, everyone falls apart when a pitcher gets on base, let's give them a courtesy runner, there is a pitcher for every inning of a ball game, granted there is a necessity for relievers of sorts although the ones who can go "9" innings are welcomed with open arms,"AMEN" BROTHER,"pitchers need to get their mentality and physical attributes back to the nine inning mode and the attitude that I can come in anytime regardless of what inning or situation, as was the attitude of the best of the past,"Johnny Sain," "Ted Williams era etc.and the front office dudes right down to their managers and coaches need to bring the game of baseball back to being played the way it was originally meant to be played.
Steve, I certainly do admire you for addressing the pitching situation as you do , more people need to get out of the box and realize that like I mentioned baseball needs to be brought back to being played the way it was originally meant to be played and more people need to devote themselves to becoming experienced, knowledgeable and competent students and "TEACHERS" of the game, once your pitchers make the necessary adjustments their improvement will come easier and quicker, stay with your convictions and have much success.
Enough said.

Pitchers and Catchers are rapidly approaching. I ahve been conisdering over the last couple of months of scrapping the compact no pump np over the head windup for my pitchers and going back to a more traditional "old School" full wind up. As coaches, We have made our pitchers non-athletes on the mound. guys go from the stretch all the time and do very little to intiate their pitch. We sit back on our back leg so much, we never build any momentum to the plate. We take a 6'4 230 lb guys and break him down so much, that we turn him into a 85 mph stiff. Wathc any Dominican or other latin kid pitch, it looks like they are going the maccarana (SP) on the mound. 5'10 160 lb latin kid throwing 95 mph. What do you think?
